AUSTIN, Texas – Heading into the track and field season, Texas thrower Ryan Crouser will be one of the athletes many will have their eyes on. After sweeping the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles in the shot put, Crouser was named to the preseason watch list for The Bowerman in 2015.
The USTFCCCA announced its men's preseason watch list for the most prestigious award in collegiate track and field on Wednesday and Crouser is one of the 10 early favorites to win the trophy.
Last season, Crouser was the only collegiate athlete in the shot put to post a mark greater than 21 meters. His closest competition was more than two feet behind him outdoors and more than 17 inches indoors.
The eight-time All-American has a total of three NCAA titles to his claim, winning the outdoor shot put in 2013 as well. He was named the 2014 USTFCCCA Men's National Field Athlete of the Year by sweeping the titles and will be entering his junior season indoors and his senior year outdoors when Texas begins its full team schedule next week.
Crouser is joined by one other Big 12 Conference student-athlete on the preseason watch list for the men. Baylor sprinter Trayvon Bromell also is named. The SEC has four on the list and two represent the Pac-12. One athlete from the MAC and Conference USA are also on the preseason list.
Texas combined events specialist, Johannes Hock was also listed among the athletes receiving votes. Hock won the decathlon at the 2013 NCAA Championships outdoors as a freshman and finished second last year.
The USTFCCCA will announce its women's preseason watch list on Thursday. Texas sprinter Courtney Okolo was one of three finalists for the 2014 Bowerman after a dominating sophomore year in the 400 meters that saw her break the collegiate record outdoors.
