Thrower posts No. 1 mark in world this season
AUSTIN, Texas – After posting the No. 1 throw in the world so far this season, Texas Longhorn Ryan Crouser was named the Big 12 Conference Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week. He shares the award this week with TCU's Sam Watts, who posted the fastest time in the world this season in the 200 meters.
Crouser won the UW Invitational this weekend with a mark of 20.95 meters (68-9.00). It not only moved him atop the NCAA ranks this season but made him No. 1 in the world to date in 2015.
"I just went up there hoping to get a better mark and ended up coming away with the world-leading throw," Crouser told Longhorn Network earlier this week. "I went in hoping to just reclaim the NCAA lead, which was a little over 67 feet. I ended up throwing mid-68 and the world lead, which was a nice surprise."
His throw also was a meet record at the UW Invitational.
"This is a great step. It's still really early," Crouser told LHN. "This early in the year that's a great sign into the training base that I've done to be able to throw a mark that big this early in the year."
Crouser has this week off from competition as his throwing teammates head to the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
