The first qualifiers for the 88th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 through Saturday, March 28 at Mike A. Myers Stadium, were announced Wednesday with the release of the University/College decathlon and heptathlon fields.
Both multi-events feature deep fields with the heptathlon having the last two Texas Relays champions and eight women who are competing at this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, while the decathlon has an Olympian and three men set to participate at NCAA Indoors.
Four athletes with ties to the Longhorns will compete in the multi-events, which will take place the first two days of the meet.
Sophomore Wolf Mahler, the 2015 Big 12 heptathlon champion who is seeded eighth at NCAA Indoors, is among the 18 men's entrants. Freshman Reese Thompson, competing unattached, is also in the decathlon field with Miller Moss, an All-American at Clemson who is now a UT volunteer assistant coach. Sierra Patrick, a junior transfer from Texas A&M who is redshirting, will compete unattached in the heptathlon.
Junior Johannes Hock, the 2013 NCAA decathlon champion and national runner-up last year, will not compete in the decathlon at the Texas Relays. He finished fourth in the heptathlon at the 2015 Big 12 Indoor Championships, but is not scheduled to compete in a multi-event until later in the outdoor season.
Lindsay Vollmer of Kansas will attempt to defend her Texas Relays title. The 2013 NCAA heptathlon champion tallied 5,640 points last year. Erica Bougard of Mississippi State, the 2013 Texas Relays champion, is also in the field. Vollmer and Bougard are among the pentathlon favorites at this weekend's NCAA Indoor meet. Taliyah Brooks (Arkansas), Leigha Brown (Arkansas), Alex Gochenour (Arkansas), Brittany Harrell (Florida), Chari Hawkins (Utah State) and Jena Hemann (Texas A&M) are the other women who will compete at both NCAA Indoors and the Texas Relays.
Ingmar Vos of the Netherlands adds international flavor to the decathlon field. He finished 21st in the event at the 2012 London Olympics. Vos trains in Austin with Texas head coach Mario Sategna.
In addition to Mahler, Dylan Anderson and Stephen Keller, both of Indiana, will compete at NCAA Indoors and the Texas Relays.
Longhorn Network will provide 15 hours of coverage of the meet with the multi-events featured the first two days. Tape-delay coverage will air from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Central on Wednesday, March 25 and 4:30 to 6 p.m. the next day.
