Texas signee sets meet record with jump of 50 feet, 8 inches.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas Men's Basketball signee Kerwin Roach captured the high school boys' triple jump title at the 2015 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday morning at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Roach, a senior at Galena Park North Shore, set a Texas Relays meet record with a jump of 50-8.00 (15.44 meters).
Roach's mark topped the previous meet record of 50-6.00 set by Mark Jackson of Taylor HS in 2010. Roach was the lone competitor in the field to top the 50-feet mark, and he accomplished that four times in his six jumps.
"I feel very accomplished," Roach said following his victory. "I just wanted to come out here and compete to show what I can do. The crowd pushed me. I didn't settle, and they made me want to give my best effort. I've been practicing a lot, running in the sand and doing lower body workouts to get in the best form possible for today's meet."
He began his progression with a leap of 50-0.25 and improved to 50-3.50 on his second jump. Roach set the meet record on his fifth attempt, before jumping 50-5.50 on his final jump.
