Texas netminder is headed to US Under-23 Women’s National Team Training Camp over April 26-May 3
LUBBOCK, Texas — Rising Texas soccer senior Abby Smith has been named by Top Drawer Soccer as one of the top 10 goalkeepers in all of women's collegiate soccer heading into the 2015 season.
The standout netminder recorded yet another outstanding season between the pipes as a junior in 2014, helping the Longhorns to an 11-8-4 record and an NCAA Second Round berth. During the year, the Plano, Texas, native and first-team NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Central Region and All-Big 12 Conference choice started 22 of 23 possible matches, registered a 0.92 goals-against-average, and with nine shutouts, equaled former Texas keeper Dianna Pfenninger's single-season record for shutouts established back in 2008. Smith also led the Big 12 with 98 saves, a mark that proved good enough to rate sixth all-time in a single campaign in UT program history.
Fresh off helping the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team to the championship of the La Manga Tournament in La Manga, Spain, over Feb. 26-March 2, Smith will soon join her Red, White & Blue teammates at a U.S. Under-23 WNT training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., from April 26-May 3. The camp will be utilized as a final evaluation to pick a 20-player roster that will travel to the 2015 Four Nations Tournament in Sarpsborg, Norway, in May to play the Under-23 squads from Sweden, Norway and England.
Smith joins Kailen Sheridan (Clemson), Holly Van Noord (Liberty), Jane Campbell (Stanford), Cassie Miller (Florida State), Casey Murphy (Rutgers), Andi Tostanoski (Santa Clara), Hannah Seabert (Pepperdine), Jackie Kerestine (North Texas) and Diana Poulin (St. John's) in making up Top Drawer Soccer's Top 10 women's collegiate goalkeepers list.
