Big 12 Conference announcement
AUSTIN, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its outdoor track and field postseason awards on Wednesday, and Texas Head Coach Mario Sategna came away with both coach of the year crowns.
Sategna was named the 2015 Big 12 Conference Men's and Women's Coach of the Year by his peers for the Longhorns' two wins at the conference championship meet this weekend.
Texas swept the outdoor titles for the first time since 2006. The men dominated the meet winning by 24.25 points over Texas Tech. The women won back-to-back titles by holding off Kansas State by 12 points after winning the 4x400 meter relay to close the meet.
Sategna and his Longhorns became the first school to sweep the men's and women's Big 12 titles both indoors and out since Texas did so in 2006. It marked the fourth time in conference history the feat has been accomplished and the third by the Longhorns.
Following indoor season Sategna was named the men's coach of the year as well. He now has five Big 12 Coach of the Year honors total in two seasons leading the program.
Baylor's Trayvon Bromell was named the Men's Outdoor Track & Field Outstanding Performer of the Year and Texas Tech thrower Hannah Carson earned Women's Outstanding Performer of the Year. K-State swept the Outstanding Freshman of the Year awards with Christoff Bryan winning for the men and A'Keyla Mitchell earning the women's award.
Texas will host the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds next week as the top athletes from the West region will attempt to advance through to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in June.
