AUSTIN, Texas – Next week the NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon, and it will be the final opportunity for the best student-athlete in collegiate track and field to make their case to win the 2015 Bowerman. In preparation for the meet, the USTFCCCA has released its final watch list for the award, and Texas senior thrower Ryan Crouser is in consideration for the award.
Crouser has been among the 10 athletes on the watch list all season and looks to defend his NCAA title in the shot put next week and eyes his first in the discus. He has a season-best throw of 21.11 meters (69-3.25) to lead the NCAA and rank No. 7 in the world.
At the Big 12 Conference Championships he successfully defended his titles in both the shot put and discus. He posted a season-best mark in the discus at 58.92 meters (193-4). He ranks 13th in the discus heading into the championship meet.
During indoor season, Crouser set a Big 12 Championship record in the shot put and finished second at the NCAA Championships.
The USTFCCCA announced its men's preseason watch list for the most prestigious award in collegiate track and field in early January and have updated it monthly along with an additional post-indoor season list. There were no changes to the 10 men on this final watch list.
Crouser, back-to-back NCAA outdoor champion in the shot put, is joined by two other Big 12 Conference student-athletes on the watch list for the men this month. Baylor sprinter Trayvon Bromell remains on the list along with 400 meter hurdler Michael Stigler of Kansas. Texas Tech high jumper JaCorian Duffield is listed among those also receiving votes. The SEC has four on the list and the Pac-12 has two athletes on the list while one represents the MAC.
The USTFCCCA will announce its final women's watch list on Thursday. Texas sprinter Courtney Okolo has been on the list all season. Okolo was one of three finalists for the 2014 Bowerman after a dominating sophomore year in the 400 meters that saw her break the collegiate record outdoors. Morolake Akinosun was listed among others receiving votes on the last watch list.
