LAWRENCE, Kan.— Senior Imani Boyette led all scorers with 15 points, and senior Empress Davenport recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 4/4 Texas past Kansas, 75-38, inside Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
With the win, Texas (16-0, 5-0 Big 12 Conference) is off to its first 5-0 Big 12 Conference start since the Longhorns' 2002-03 campaign. The Horns have beaten the Jayhawks in the last six meetings and lead the all-time series, 20-10. In addition, the victory secured Texas head coach Karen Aston's 175th career victory.
"I think we did a good job of resetting at halftime and executing and, in particular, getting the ball inside," said Aston. "I thought in the third quarter we did a really good job of getting our post players involved in the game."
Two-time defending Big 12 Player of the Week Boyette got her 15 points behind a 5-for-8 effort from the field and a 5-for-6 effort from the line. She totaled eight rebounds on the night and tacked on three blocks. Davenport's double-double included a season-high 10 rebounds. Junior Brianna Taylor had a career-high five steals, and senior Celina Rodrigo tied her season-high assists with seven and added five rebounds in the game.
As a team, Texas shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) from the field and 85.2 percent (23-for-27) from the charity stripe. The Longhorns held the Jayhawks to a 25.5 shooting percentage (12-for-47) and outrebounded the Jayhawks, 46-26.
Kansas (5-11, 0-5 Big 12 Conference) was led by Lauren Aldridge with 12 points in her 34 minutes of play.
Texas would hold Kansas scoreless for over six minutes to get off to a 17-0 run fueled by transition play. The Longhorns would only allow the Jayhawks seven points in the first quarter and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line to take the first, 28-7.
The Jayhawks would find their footing behind the arc, draining three triples in a 12-5 spurt to trail Texas by 14 (19-33) with 3:03 remaining in second quarter. Sophomore Ariel Atkins would add two layups, and freshman Jordan Hosey would tack on a free throw to close out the half, 38-19 Texas.
Boyette would score the first six points out of the locker room, pushing the Horns to a 44-21 advantage at the 8:02 mark of the third quarter. Both teams would be busy from the line in the next few minutes, but a Kansas triple would make it 51-25 Texas at the halfway point of the third. The Longhorns would close the quarter on a 9-3 run, and a Davenport layup would end the third quarter, 60-28 Texas.
Texas opened the fourth, 9-0, and a pair of free throws from sophomore Tasia Foman gave the Horns their largest 43-point lead of the game (71-28) with 4:29 remaining in regulation. Kansas would find success from downtown again on a 10-4 run, but Texas would take the game, 75-38.
The Horns return to action on Sunday as they host No. 6/7 Baylor (17-1, 4-1 Big 12 Conference) inside the Frank Erwin Center. Tip is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
