Longhorns rally from 3-1 down to earn a spot in Sunday’s ITA Kick-Off Weekend finals.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Texas (1-0) dropped the doubles point but rallied behind singles wins from senior Breaunna Addison, junior Neda Koprcina, sophomore Dani Wagland and freshman Chelsea Crovetti, as the Longhorns topped Purdue by a 4-3 count.
The match was the first of two contests this weekend for Texas in the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend event. The Horns advance to Sunday's final round at the event's Tuscaloosa site and will take on either host Alabama or Pennsylvania. The winner advances to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
"Today's win was emblematic of the extent to which our ladies are turning into a real team," said first-year Texas head coach Howard Joffe. "Everyone chipped in, and at 3-1 down in matches, pulling out a team victory was the product of top character and a total team effort."
Purdue won doubles matches at the second and third positions to assume a 1-0 match lead before UT's Addison evened the match in short order and defeated Purdue's Deborah Suarez, 6-0, 6-1.
The Boilermakers reclaimed the lead at 3-1 with wins at the fifth and third positions before Texas rallied to victory. Wagland trimmed the Purdue lead to 3-2 with her 6-3, 7-5 win over Andjela Djokovic at second singles. Crovetti knotted the match at three behind her 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Marta Ruedas-Burgos at sixth singles that set the stage for Koprcina to clinch.
Koprcina split the first two sets with Purdue's Natalia Davila at fourth singles but put away Davila in the third set, 6-1 to finish off the Longhorns' 4-3 win.
"Chelsea Crovetti played a stellar third set under enormous pressure to level the match," Joffe added. "Then, Neda punctuated why she is known as such a ferocious competitor by winning and clinching the deciding set and dual."
