Felix posts team-high 16 points and Taylor reaches 1,000-point club in defeat.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Junior guard Isaiah Taylor scored 13 points to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark, but the Longhorns fell to TCU, 58-57, in a Big 12 Conference matchup at Schollmaier Arena on Saturday night. The victory is TCU's first over Texas since 1995, breaking an 11-game winning streak for the Longhorns between the two teams.
Taylor is the 36th player to reach the 1,000 career point milestone in program history. Taylor played and started in his 74th career game as a Longhorn on Saturday night. Javan Felix led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and added three assists.
TCU (9-6, 1-2 Big 12) was led by the dual attack of Brandon Parrish, who tallied 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the 3-point line, and Chris Washburn, who recorded 14 points and eight rebounds.
Texas (9-6, 1-2) scored its first 16 points in the paint to grab a 16-14 lead at the 10:27 mark, but the Horned Frogs went on a 12-0 run to build a 26-16 advantage with 7:39 remaining..
Texas would rally back following six straight points from Felix and a 3-pointer from Eric Davis, Jr., to cut the TCU lead to 30-27 with 1:37 in the half. TCU would take a 34-32 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 42-36 lead at the 17:10 mark. Following a pair of free throws from Washburn, neither team scored for nearly four minutes before Kendal Yancy and Davis knocked down back-to-back threes to keep Texas on top 48-44 with 11:45 remaining.
TCU would even the score at 52 following a free throw by Shepherd at the 5:15 mark. The Horned Frogs would take a 56-54 lead following a layup from Chauncey Collins. Texas countered with a dunk from Prince Ibeh to put the Longhorns ahead 57-56 with 1:41 remaining.
A jumper from Washburn gave TCU a 58-57 lead with 1:12 remaining, and the Longhorns went 0-of-4 from the field in the final minute of play. Despite missing four consecutive free throws in the final minute of play, TCU was able to hold on for the win.
The Longhorns finished the night shooting 37.1-percent from the field (23-of-62) and were cold from behind the arc, sinking 14.3-percent of their 3-point attempts (3-of-21). Texas scored 40 of its 57 points in the paint.
Texas returns to action when it hosts No. 13/14 Iowa State on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
