MORE ON THE LONGHORNS
As is the norm, Texas features a talented and accomplished group of men's divers. Senior Mark Anderson, the two-time reigning Big 12 Diver of the Year, earned All-America honors on all three boards at the 2016 NCAA Championships and was a finalist at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials. He scored on all three boards at the last two NCAA Championships meets when the Longhorns secured NCAA team titles.
Redshirt senior Sean O'Brien qualified for his first NCAA Championship meet a season ago. O'Brien was the runner-up on one-meter and the third-place finisher on three-meter at the 2016 Big 12 Championships in Austin.
The upperclassmen welcome three newcomers in the form of Grayson Campbell, Reed Merritt and Jacob Cornish. Campbell, the nation's top incoming diver, placed ninth on three-meter at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials. He went on to sweep the one-meter and three-meter titles (boys' 16-18 age group) last summer at the 2016 USA Diving AT&T National Diving Championships.
Cornish placed fourth in men's platform at the 2016 USA Diving AT&T National Diving Championships. The Honolulu native was Hawai'i's state champion on one-meter last season.
Merritt joins the Longhorns as the one-meter and three-meter champion (boys' 16-18 age group) at the 2016 USA Diving National Zone "E" Meet.
The Texas women are off to a strong start on the heels of outstanding performances from sophomore Meghan O'Brien and freshman Alison Gibson. O'Brien, the younger sister of the aforementioned Sean O'Brien, swept the one-meter and three-meter boards in the Longhorns' season-opening wins over Indiana and Florida. She won the one-meter event in UT's victory over Texas A&M and swept both boards once more against N.C. State.
Gibson, the sixth-place finisher on three-meter at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, scored her first collegiate victory when she won the one-meter event against Texas A&M. The Austin native added a second win on three-meter last Saturday at Stanford.
Sophomore Sofia Rauzi returns after placing third on both one-meter and platform at the 2016 Big 12 Championships.
