Talented freshman Grayson Campbell takes the lead late in the contest and finishes off the victory.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas freshman Grayson Campbell took the lead in the fifth round and held on to victory in the men's three-meter finals Friday on day two at the Texas Diving Invitational.
Campbell trailed Texas All-America senior Mark Anderson through four rounds but totaled a meet-best 84 points on his fifth dive, an inward two-and-a-half somersault that positioned him toward the victory.
Campbell, the nation's top incoming men's diver, totaled 76.5 points on his final dive, a two-and-a-half somersault with two twists, to secure the three-meter title with 442.05 points.
"It feels great, and words can't describe my feelings right now," Campbell said. "On my fifth-round dive, as I was standing there I was thinking about getting a good hurdle. I knew what I needed to do, as long as I hit the hurdle. Mark Anderson is one of the best divers in the country. Training with him makes me want to be a better diver. Watching him dive sparks the competitor inside of me."
Anderson, a two-time All-American on three-meter, placed third in Friday's final with 412.10 points. Freshman Reed Merritt added a fifth-place score of 382.65 points while his classmate, Jacob Cornish, placed seventh with 335.60 points.
The Texas men wrap up competition at the Texas Diving Invitational on Saturday with the platform final at 12:45 p.m. CT.
