Mark Anderson, Meghan O’Brien and Grayson Campbell win berths for Team USA at next summer’s World University Games in Taiwan.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Texas divers Mark Anderson, Meghan O'Brien and Grayson Campbell earned berths to compete at the 2017 World University Games by posting qualifying performances Tuesday evening at the 2016 USA Diving Winter National Championships.
The sophomore O'Brien and the freshman Campbell teamed up to win the mixed three-meter synchronized final Tuesday with 266.10 points. The Texas tandem needed to win the event and eclipse 258 points to earn a berth for next summer's World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan, and the Horns fulfilled both criteria.
O'Brien and Campbell took the lead by way of their third of five dives, a back two-and-a-half somersault that yielded 71.10 points. Missouri's Kyle Goodwin and Lauren Reedy had an opportunity to win on their final dive but fell 5.1 points short.
Anderson landed his berth for the World University Games as the second-highest American finisher in Tuesday's men's three-meter final. Anderson placed third overall with 1,186.45 points through the preliminary, semifinal and final rounds of competition.
Campbell placed sixth overall and as the No. 5 American finisher in the men's three-meter final with 1,109.55 points. UT signee Jordan Windle placed seventh with 1,096.15 points.
Anderson, O'Brien and Campbell join UT freshman diver Alison Gibson as qualifiers for the 2017 World University Games. Gibson has qualified on one-meter.
