Allen posts fifth double-double of the year with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman forward Jarrett Allen's fifth double-double of the year was not enough to propel Texas to victory against Kansas State on Friday night, as the Longhorns dropped their Big 12 Conference opener, 65-62, before a sellout crowd of 12,528 at Bramlage Coliseum.
Allen led the Longhorns with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward Shaquille Cleare and sophomore guard Kerwin Roach Jr. each registered 10 points to join Allen in double-digit scoring for Texas.
Kansas State sophomore forward Dean Wade posted a team-high 18 points, converting 7-of-10 field goals on the night. Wesley Iwundu contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, and Kamau Stokes hit 9-of-10 free throws en route to a 15-point effort. The Wildcats scored 26 points on 33 free throw attempts, while Texas shot 7-of-12 from the stripe.
Texas (6-7, 0-1 Big 12) outscored the Wildcats 11-4 to open the contest, capped by an Allen dunk at the 15:52 mark. Kansas State (12-1, 1-0) responded with a 15-0 run to claim a 19-11 advantage with 10:31 remaining in the first half.
The Longhorns grabbed their first lead (26-25) since early in the half with a Cleare layup at the 1:50 mark. Stokes and UT sophomore guard/forward Tevin Mack traded threes on ensuing possessions to give Texas a 29-28 lead with 50 seconds remaining. D.J. Johnson drained two free throws and Iwundu tacked on a layup to give K-State a 32-29 cushion at the half.
Texas limited the Wildcats to just 1-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. K-State converted 15-of-19 free throws compared to 5-of-8 by the Longhorns in the first half.
In the second half, Wade and Iwundu combined for three consecutive 3-pointers as the Wildcats jumped out to a 10-point lead (43-33) at the 14:39 mark. The Wildcats grabbed their largest advantage of the game (56-44) following a Barry Brown jumper with 5:02 remaining. The Longhorns scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to six (56-50) with 1:09 to play.
Texas used 3-pointers from freshmen Jacob Young and Andrew Jones to trim the margin to 62-58 with 18 seconds left. Brown converted 1-of-2 free throws, and Texas sophomore guard Eric Davis Jr. made a layup to cut the lead to 63-60 with 7 seconds remaining. Stokes converted a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
The Longhorns return home on Wednesday, Jan. 4 to face Oklahoma State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Frank Erwin Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network. LHN will air "Texas GameDay" live from the Erwin Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT to preview the home league opener for the Longhorns.
