Men's Basketball falls short at Michigan, 53-50

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore guard/forward Tevin Mack posted a game-high 18 points and five rebounds, but a putback from Moritz Wagner sealed a 53-50 win for Michigan over Texas at Crisler Center on Tuesday night. The Longhorns (4-4) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the first half in a back-and-forth game that saw eight lead changes.
Wagner led all Michigan scorers with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor. Michigan (7-2) shot 41.7-percent from the field (20-of-48) and committed only nine fouls throughout the game, holding the Longhorns to 5-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line.
The Longhorns fell behind early but a pair of free throws and a layup from Mack trimmed the deficit to 8-7 at the 14:42 mark. Michigan went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-11 lead with 9:53 remaining. The Wolverines held the lead for the rest of the first half, but Mack finished with six points in the final 51 seconds to cut the Michigan lead to 31-28 at the break.
Both teams had a hot start to the second half, with forwards Jarrett Allen and Shaquille Cleare sinking jumpers to keep the Longhorns within four (36-32) at the 17:49 mark. Freshman guard Jacob Young's first points of the night came off a lead-changing 3-pointer which put Texas ahead (38-37) for the first time since 18:13 in the first half. A breakaway dunk by Andrew Jones extended that cushion to 40-37 with 14:03 remaining.
Michigan stormed back with a 6-0 run in the next 1:54, holding the Texas offense scoreless over a stretch of 3:24 to take build a 43-40 advantage at the 11:04 mark. The Longhorns took back the lead with a clutch jumper from Davis and another slam dunk from Cleare to go up 44-43 with 9:48 remaining.
Both teams were solid on the defensive side of the ball over the next 5:22, scoring only two points each until another Cleare jumper extended the Texas lead to 48-45 with 4:25 remaining. A critical three for Michigan from Zak Irvin tied the score at 48 heading into the final four minutes.
Roach put the Longhorns ahead with a jumper with 1:56 to go, but Wagner's game-winning putback with 16 seconds remaining proved to be the difference.
The Longhorns return home to face Long Beach State on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip is set for 5 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
