Lammert ties his career high with 15 points, including a huge 3-pointer with 44 seconds left, to pace the Longhorns.
WACO, Texas – Senior forward Connor Lammert tied a career high with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, as the Longhorns posted an impressive 67-59 road win against No. 15/13 Baylor at the Ferrell Center on Monday night. Texas has won six of its last seven games and improved to 4-1 this season against AP Top 20 opponents, including a 2-1 mark in true road games.
Senior guard Isaiah Taylor was one assist shy of his second career double-double, finishing the night with 12 points, nine assists and three steals. Senior center Prince Ibeh continued his recent strong play, registering nine points, six boards and five blocks. The Longhorns (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) recorded 21 assists on 21 made field goals.
Rico Gathers led three players scoring in double digits for Baylor (17-5, 6-3 Big 12), scoring a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and adding eight rebounds. Taurean Prince added 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range and seven boards.
The Longhorns got off to a hot start as Taylor sank the game's first shot from behind the arc to give his team an early lead. Kerwin Roach sank his first two 3-point attempts to put Texas ahead 19-16 at the 12:06 mark. The Longhorns finished the first half shooting 5-of-10 from long range.
Texas extended its lead to 28-22 at the 6:10 mark following a jumper from Javan Felix. He led the team with seven points and five assists without a turnover in the first half, giving the Longhorns a 35-29 lead at the break.
Baylor tied the game at 37-37 following a pair of 3-pointers by Prince at the 15:05 mark. Lammert put Texas up 40-37 after a three-point play at the 14:00 mark.
After a series of ties and lead changes, the Longhorns used a Taylor layup and a jumper from Shaq Cleare to give Texas a 47-43 lead with 9:51 remaining. Texas spent the next few minutes continuing to build its lead following a Lammert 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 52-47 with 5:57 remaining.
Ibeh silenced the Baylor crowd with a dunk at 4:32 to put the Longhorns ahead 56-49. Baylor used a 7-2 run to get to within two points, but the Bears' momentum grinded to a halt after top scorer Gathers fouled out with 1:27 remaining. Another clutch three from Lammert extended the Texas lead to 62-56 with 44 seconds left in the game, and Baylor missed its final six shots from the field.
Texas shot 47.7 percent from the field (21-of-44) and forced 11 Baylor turnovers, outscoring the Bears 18-7 on points off turnovers. The Texas defense held Baylor to 35.2-percent shooting from the field (19-of-54), including a 29.4-percent mark from beyond the arc (5-of-17).
The Longhorns return home to face Texas Tech on Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip is set for 1 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
