Jumper leads nation after first week of outdoor season
AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Asa Garcia opened her outdoor season with a victory at the TCU Invitational last week and today was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Female Athlete of the Week.
Garcia carried her success from the indoor season to the outdoors as she won the triple jump with a leap of 12.91 meters (42-4.25) to win over Baylor's Rachel Toliver by a close margin of just four centimeters. The jump also was top in the nation for the first week of outdoor season and already ranks Garcia as No. 6 in school history.
The other female recipient this week was Oklahoma's Julia Reedy for her winning throw and new school record in the hammer throw at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. The first men's recipient of the outdoor season was Ronnie Baker of TCU. Baker ran a wind-aided time of 9.95 seconds to win the 100 meters.
This is Garcia's first Big 12 Athlete of the Week award. She and the Longhorns will hit the road this week to Los Angeles for the Cardinal & Gold Challenge and another will go south to the Ricardo Romo Invitational hosted by UTSA.
