Lloyd Glasspool receives entry into the men’s doubles draw at Wimbledon while former Longhorn Ed Corrie earns a wild card into the qualifying singles draw.
AUSTIN, Texas – The All England Lawn Tennis Club has awarded former Longhorn Lloyd Glasspool (2012-15) a wild card entry into the gentlemen's doubles draw at The Championships Wimbledon. Additionally, Glasspool and former Longhorn Ed Corrie (2008-11) have received wild card entries for the gentlemen's singles qualifying draw at Wimbledon.
Corrie and Glasspool begin singles qualifying next week while Glasspool opens competition with Dan Evans in the gentlemen's doubles draw on June 29 at the All England Club.
Glasspool has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last year in the ATP world singles and doubles rankings. The Englishman, who won the 2015 NCAA doubles title at Texas alongside Søren Hess-Olesen, finished his Longhorns career last May ranked No. 1747 in the world in singles while being unranked in doubles.
Since then, Glasspool has vaulted all the way up to a career-best No. 307 in the latest ATP singles rankings and No. 245 in the world in doubles.
"Lloyd has had a phenomenal year, and he's the highest-ranked player among 2015 college tennis graduates," said UT head coach Michael Center. "He only started playing regularly on tour last July. We're really excited for Lloyd and proud of the progress he's made in such a short time."
Corrie currently ranks 357th in the world in singles and No. 1010 in the world in doubles. He defeated Spain's Daniel Munoz de la Nava in the opening round of singles qualifying last year at Wimbledon before falling to Spain's Inigo Cervantes in the second round.
"Much like Lloyd, Ed was on some outstanding teams here at Texas, and it's nice to see his continued success on tour," Center added. "It must be a huge thrill for anyone, much less a native Brit, to play in any tournament draw at Wimbledon. We're proud of Ed and happy that he gets another opportunity to qualify."
GOLDHOFF RISES TO NO. 40 IN FINAL ITA RANKINGS
A particularly strong postseason resulted in a jump of nearly 30 spots in the final ITA singles rankings for Texas rising senior George Goldhoff.
The Californian finished the regular season with a No. 68 ITA singles ranking, but a 3-0 mark in the NCAA Championships with a pair of top-20 wins elevated Goldhoff to a career best No. 40 in the final rankings.
Goldhoff opened Texas' run in the NCAA Championships with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lamar's Michael Feucht before toppling Texas A&M's 20th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech to clinch UT's 4-3 win over the Aggies in the tournament's second round.
Goldhoff handed Ohio State's top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard his first dual-match loss of the season in the NCAA round of 16, as Texas nearly notched its second upset win of the tournament before falling to the Buckeyes 4-3.
Texas rising sophomore Harrison Scott finished at No. 112 in the final ITA singles rankings. Michael Riechmann, who completed his collegiate eligibility last month, finished at No. 60 in the ITA doubles rankings with UT rising junior Adrian Ortiz.
TEXAS TO HOST 2017 ITA KICK-OFF WEEKEND EVENT
Texas' No. 16 final team ranking gave the Longhorns an opportunity to host one of 15 sites for the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend event.
Texas holds the No. 1 seed at the Austin site and will host Rice as the No. 2 seed, Oregon as the No. 3 seed and Drake as the No. 4 seed in the two-day event. The team that wins both of its matches earns a spot to compete at the 2017 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Texas hosts the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event Jan. 28-29, 2017 at The Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Indoor Tennis Center on the grounds of The University of Texas Golf Club.
TEXAS SIGNEE YUYA ITO BUILDING MOMENTUM
Incoming UT freshman Yuya Ito of Japan has jumped over 700 places in the ATP world singles rankings and accumulated 17 ATP points as he prepares for his first semester of collegiate tennis at Texas.
Ito made his first appearance in the world rankings this year at No. 1760, but a bundle of wins in ITF futures events has elevated Ito to a career high of No. 1052 in the June 13 rankings.
Last month at an ITF Futures event in India, Ito advanced to the semifinals after defeating Christopher Rungkat, who has ranked as high as No. 241 in the world. Earlier at the same event, Ito defeated Vijay Sundar Prashanth, who ranked as high as No. 335 as recently as last year.
Ito joins Danish standout Christian Sigsgaard as newcomers at Texas for the 2016-17 season. Sigsgaard, who signed with the Longhorns in April, defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili, the world's 96th-ranked player in a Davis Cup match for Denmark.
The pair of newcomers join a formidable 2016-17 Longhorns squad that returns all but one student-athlete from the 2015-16 team that was a third-set tiebreak away from reaching the quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships.
