Madisyn Cox takes fourth in the 200 individual medley while Jack Conger places third in the 200 butterfly.
OMAHA, Neb. – Texas rising seniors Madisyn Cox and Jack Conger paced the Longhorns with top-four finishes in their respective finals Wednesday evening on night four of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
Conger competed in his second final in as many nights and took third in the 200 butterfly final at 1:56.45. Conger held fourth place through 100 meters at 55.71 before slipping to eighth at 150 meters in 1:26.27.
The American record holder in the 200-yard butterfly, Conger outran the rest of the field in the final 50 meters with a 30.18 final split, but his final mark of 1:56.45 fell short of Michael Phelps and Tom Shields, who took top honors at 1:54.84 and 1:55.81, respectively.
Cox set out for her second final of the week after taking fourth in Sunday's 400 IM. In Wednesday's 200 IM final, the Lubbock native held third at 100 meters (1:01.14) and maintained third place after the event's breaststroke leg at 1:38.97. The All-American clocked 2:11.24 for her second fourth-place finish of the week.
"I'm a little tired, and it was a hard race," Cox said. "I went after it and just didn't have enough at the end. It's a little disappointing, but it's also motivating. I've still got a lot of time in my career and a lot of goals I want to achieve."
Six-time NCAA champion Will Licon reached his second final of the week after taking second in his 200 breaststroke semifinal heat and qualifying third overall at 2:09.08.
"It's a nice swim, and I'll take it," Licon said. "I just wanted to swim my own race and stay in the mix of things from the get-go and hammer it home."
Former Longhorn Jimmy Feigen qualified fourth for Thursday's final of the 100 freestyle at 48.65. The three-time NCAA champion looks for his second Olympics berth after winning silver as part of the USA's 4x100m freestyle relay four years ago in London.
Incoming freshman Lauren Case placed fourth in her 200 butterfly semifinal heat and took 10th place overall at 2:11.17.
