RIO — Former University of Texas standout Kevin Durant posted 17 points to help Team USA to a 100-97 win against France (3-2) in preliminary round play at the 2016 Olympics on Sunday afternoon. Durant converted 6-of-6 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws while adding a team-high 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in a team-high 30 minutes.
Durant has reached double figures in scoring in each of the first five games at the Rio Olympics and in all 13 career games played in Olympic competition. Through the first five contests in Rio, Durant leads Team USA in scoring (16.8 ppg), steals (5) and minutes (28.2 mpg) while converting 27-of-45 (.600) field goals, including 11-of-18 (.611) from three-point range, and 19-of-23 (.826) free throws.
The Americans (5-0) finished Group A pool play with a perfect 5-0 record. Team USA advances to the quarterfinal round and will take on the fourth-place team from Group B (opponent to be determined) on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Tip time for that contest is to be announced, and the game will be televised live by NBC Sports Network.
The winners of the four quarterfinal contests will play in the semifinals on Friday, Aug. 19. The gold and bronze medal games will be held on Sunday, Aug. 21.
