No. 16/17 Women’s Basketball picks up win over Oklahoma State, 66-35

The Longhorns held the Cowgirls to their lowest score and shooting percentage of the season.

AUSTIN, Texas – Head coach Karen Aston notched her 100th victory at the helm for the Longhorns as No. 16/17 Texas Women's Basketball (11-4, 5-0 Big 12 Conference) routed Oklahoma State (12-4, 2-3 Big 12 Conference) inside the Erwin Center on Tuesday night, 66-35.
The win marks the lowest score the Longhorns have held a Big 12 opponent in the Aston era.
Texas leads the all-time series over Oklahoma State, 30-15, and has captured five of the last six meetings.
"We're growing," said Aston. "Everything's not going to be perfect all the time, but I do think that we've actually grown in the last week. We've gotten better. As long as we're continuing to do that, then I'm pleased."
Junior Brooke McCarty led all scorers with 16 points, including a 4-6 effort from downtown, tying her season-high for triples. Freshman Joyner Holmes registered nine points and boards along with ta game-high three blocks.
Junior Ariel Atkins contributed a game-high three assists with five points and eight rebounds.
As a team, Texas shot 32.8 percent (21-64) from the field and 50.0 percent (6-12) from three-point land. Oklahoma State was held to only 35 points and an 18.6 shooting percentage (11-59), its lowest of the season in both categories.
The Longhorns held the Big 12's leading scorer, Oklahoma State's Kaylee Jensen, to 10 points, her lowest of the year. The junior also led the Cowgirls in boards with 10.
McCarty totaled nine points, including two triples, in the first quarter to lead all scorers. After a Cowgirl jumper opened the game, the Texas offense capped the first quarter with a 7-0 run to make it 22-8 Horns.
The Longhorns limited the Cowgirls to only one basket and two free throws in the low-scoring second quarter. Redshirt sophomore Khaléann Caron-Goudreau knocked down the first five points for the Longhorns in the stanza, and free throws from freshman Jada Underwood and Atkins closed the half, 31-12 Texas.
The Horns outscored the Cowgirls, 19-9, in the third quarter. The stanza was highlighted by two triples from McCarty and a behind-the-back layup from sophomore Lashann Higgs to end the third, 50-21 Texas.
Oklahoma State took the first five points of the fourth quarter, all from the charity stripe. Texas sealed the game on a 9-1 run to extend its win streak to nine with the 66-35 victory.
