Jones leads Longhorns with 16 points and a career-high eight assists in defeat.
ATHENS, Georgia – Freshman guard Andrew Jones posted his fifth-straight game in double-figure scoring with 16 points and a career-high eight assists, but Georgia held off Texas, 59-57, as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge presented by SONIC at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore duo of Eric Davis Jr. and Kerwin Roach Jr. scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, each shooting 4-of-8 from the field.
Yante Maten led Georgia (13-8) with 21 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while J.J. Frazier added 14 points.
Each team opened the game playing solid defense, with Georgia scoring the first two points of the game off a William Jackson II dunk at the 18:54 mark. A three-pointer from Davis opened the scoring for the Longhorns at the 15:52 mark, and a pair of fast break layups off turnovers from Jones extended the Texas lead to 7-2 with 14:56 remaining. A trio of jumpers from the Bulldogs allowed Georgia to retake the lead, 8-7, heading into the second media timeout of the half.
Texas (8-13) responded with a 9-0 run over 1:36 to retake the lead, 16-8, at the 9:11 mark. Another three from Davis extended the Longhorn lead into double digits (19-9) with 8:25 remaining. The Bulldogs were held without a field goal in the final 4:53 of the first half, allowing Texas to build its lead to 32-23 heading into halftime. Davis led all Texas scorers with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Georgia started the second half with an 8-0 surge in the first 2:47, cutting the Longhorns' lead to 32-31 at the 17:13 mark. A 3-on-2 fast break opportunity for the Bulldogs left Jordan Harris open for a three with 13:13 remaining to give Georgia its first lead (38-36) since the 12:05 mark in the first half.
Jones answered with a driving layup and a foul, converting his free throw to give Texas a 39-38 lead at the 12:41 mark. After a Shaquille Cleare layup, the Longhorns were held scoreless over a span of 3:51, allowing Georgia to regain the lead (43-41) with 9:10 remaining.
James Banks reached a new season high in points (5) following a layup and subsequent free throw to put Texas ahead (44-43) at the 7:38 mark. Foul trouble caught up with the Longhorns as Cleare fouled out with 6:09 remaining, sending Georgia to the free-throw line and taking a 51-44 lead following an 8-0 run over a stretch of 1:05. Georgia finished the game converting 77.3-percent (17-of-22) of its shots from the free throw line.
Georgia extended its lead to six (55-49) following a jumper from Juwan Parker with 2:51 remaining. Consecutive baskets in the paint by Roach and Davis cut the lead to 55-53. Following another jumper from Parker, a three from Jones brought the Longhorns back within one (57-56) with 1:20 left.
Trailing 59-57 with eight seconds remaining,Texas had a chance to tie the game and force overtime. Jarrett Allen received the ball in the paint, but his shot rimmed in and out of the basket at the buzzer to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Texas will resume Big 12 Conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at home against Texas Tech. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
