Roach records season-high 21 points and five assists in a career-high 37 minutes played.
AMES, Iowa – Sophomore guard Kerwin Roach Jr. posted a season-high 21 points, but Iowa State held off the visiting Longhorns, 79-70, in a Big 12 Conference matchup at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday night. Texas shot 52.9-percent from the field (27-of-51), including a season-best 50-percent from beyond the arc (8-of-16), but it was not enough as the Cyclones earned the win on their home court.
Roach went 7-of-9 from the floor, including a career-high 4-of-4 from 3-point land, and added five assists in a career-high 37 minutes played. Sophomore guard/forward Tevin Mack scored 15 points and had six rebounds, while freshmen Andrew Jones and Jarrett Allen rounded out the Longhorns in double-figure scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Iowa State (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) was led by Deonte Burton, who scored 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Monte Morris notched a double-double for the Cyclones, recording 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Texas (7-8, 1-2 Big 12) used a 9-2 run over a stretch of 3:01 to claim a 17-13 lead with 10:50 left in the first half. The Longhorns committed 12 turnovers in the opening half (compared to just two for Iowa State), and the Cyclones used an 11-2 margin in points off turnovers to build a 40-31 at halftime.
The Longhorns opened the second half with a pair of baskets from senior forward Shaquille Cleare, but Iowa State's duo of Burton and Morris scored nine points to extend the lead to 49-35 at the 16:49 mark. The Longhorns then answered with an 8-0 run over the next 2:52 to cut the Iowa State lead to 49-43 lead with 13:36 remaining.
After a free throw from Jones pulled Texas to within 51-45 at the 11:01 mark, Burton scored the Cyclones' next seven points over a span of 1:07 to extend ISU's lead to 58-45 with 9:46 remaining. Texas used a 13-4 run, highlighted by a pair of threes from Roach, to trim Iowa State's advantage to 62-58 with 6:21 left in the game.
Threes from Naz Mitrou-Long and Morris kept Iowa State ahead, but the Longhorns responded with baskets from Mack, Jones and Allen to pull Texas to within 68-65 with 3:42 left. The Cyclones held Texas scoreless over the next 2:30 to seal the victory
Texas out-rebounded the Cyclones by a margin of 35-29. However, a season-high 19 turnovers by the Longhorns helped ISU post a 20-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Longhorns return home to face TCU on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
