Texas quintet reaches the round of 32 Friday afternoon in Fort Worth.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas advanced five Longhorns to the third round of the women's singles draw Friday on day one of the annual ITA Texas Regional Championships.
"Today was an excellent day for the ladies," said third-year Texas head coach Howard Joffe. "With so many stellar results for the Longhorns, it's tough to single out anyone. But, Bojana Markovic and Marta Perez-Mur were superb with wins over tough opponents. Katie Poluta also added another huge win to her already strong fall season. We still have a lot of tennis ahead, and hopefully the ladies will be ready to go once again tomorrow."
UT junior Katie Poluta started her day in the round of 128 and notched a pair of wins to move on to Saturday's third round. The South African shut out Joy Ming Ming Chia of Texas State in round one (6-0, 6-0) before dealing Rice's Michaela Haet a 6-4, 7-6 (4) defeat in round two. Poluta takes on TCU's Meredith Roberts in the third round Saturday at noon.
Top-seeded sophomore Bianca Turati earned a first-round bye and defeated Houston's Sveva Mazzari, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the second round. She meets Rice's Anna Bowtell in the third round (Saturday, noon CT). Bianca's twin sister Anna followed suit and reached the third round by way of a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Houston State's Lusine Chobanyan. Anna Turati takes on Texas A&M's Riley McQuaid in the third round (Saturday, noon CT).
Texas freshman Bojana Markovic received a first-round bye and defeated Baylor's Livia Kraus, 6-0, 6-1 in round two. Markovic meets Nidal Kamal of Stephen F. Austin in the third round (Saturday, noon CT). UT sophomore Petra Granic also earned a first-round bye, and reached the third round with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Louise Trigona of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Granic meets Texas Tech's Alexandra Angyalosy in the third round (Saturday, noon).
Texas freshman Marta Perez-Mur posted an impressive 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Baylor's Kristina Sorokolet but was unable to stave off elimination in the second round.
