Turati wins all-Longhorn singles final at ITA Texas Regional Championships

Texas sophomore Bianca Turati holds off classmate Petra Granic to win the women’s singles title, and UT falls just two points shy of winning the doubles title.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas sophomore Bianca Turati held off teammate Petra Granic in the singles final and delivered the Longhorns their second singles title in the last three years Tuesday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
Tuesday's singles and doubles finals featured an abundance of burnt orange with Turati and Granic in singles plus the Texas tandem of Dani Wagland and Marta Perez-Mur against Rice in the doubles final.
Turati held off Granic by a 7-5, 6-3 count and gave the Longhorns their first ITA Texas Regional singles champion since Breaunna Addison in 2015. Turati and Granic earned automatic bids into next month's ITA National Fall Championships by reaching the singles final in Fort Worth.
"Bianca and Petra waged a demanding battle," said UT head coach Howard Joffe. "These ladies are teammates and roommates, and I cannot be more proud of the way in which the match was played. Both ladies were ferocious and yet were great sportswomen! Today, Bianca came out on top and no one is happier for her than Petra."
Texas' Wagland and Perez-Mur met Rice's Wendy Zhang and Lindsey Hodge for the doubles title. The Horns won the first set, 6-3, but the Owls answered by winning set two, 6-4. The third set progressed to a highly competitive tiebreaker, where Rice prevailed by the slimmest of margins, 10-8.
"In the doubles, Dani Wagland and Marta Perez-Mur had a convincing lead, but the Rice team has so much experience and was able to pip us at the post," Joffe added. "It was a great showing for the freshman (Perez-Mur) and nice to see Dani back to top tennis!'
