Men’s Basketball falls in overtime to No.17/17 Gonzaga at PK80 Invitational, 76-71

Freshman guard Matt Coleman posted a career-high 19 points, as the Longhorns rallied from 21 points down in the second half to force overtime.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Freshman point guard Matt Coleman recorded a career-high 19 points, but the Texas Men's Basketball team (4-2) fell in overtime to No. 17/17 Gonzaga (5-1), 76-71 in the third-place game at the PK80-Phil Knight Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Texas trailed by 21 points (54-33) with 14:08 remaining but mounted a furious comeback to force overtime.
Coleman shot 7-15 from the field and added four assists and a career-high four steals. Sophomore guard Andrew Jones tied a career high with 18 points on 6-12 shooting (3-5 threes), while junior forward Dylan Osetkowski contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Junior guard Kerwin Roach II tied his career high with 11 rebounds and added seven points, while freshman forward Mohamed Bamba had 10 rebounds, nine boards and tied his season high with five blocked shots.
The Longhorns forced a season-high 24 turnovers and converted them into 27 points.
The Longhorns raced out to an early 16-8 lead at the 12:22 mark behind eight points from Coleman on 3-3 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Gonzaga used a 24-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 16-point (32-16) advantage with six minutes remaining in the first half. Bamba finished the first half with a dunk at the buzzer, but Texas trailed at half for the first time this season, 42-28.
Coleman led the Longhorns in the first half with 10 points on 4-6 shooting from the field. Gonzaga shot 61.5 percent (8-13) from behind-the-arc in the opening 20 minutes.
A pair of Gonzaga free throws with 14:08 remaining in the game helped the Bulldogs open up their largest lead of 21 (54-33) points.
Texas trimmed the deficit to 14 points after Coleman connected on a three-pointer at the 12:27 mark. Trailing 58-42 with 6:11 remaining, the Longhorns used a 9-0 spurt to cut the lead to single digits (58-51) at the 5:04 mark, fueled by four points and a pair of steals from Osetkowski.
A Jones layup with 2:11 remaining brought the Longhorns within four (63-59), capping another 7-0 run by Texas. Trailing 67-62 following a free throw by Gonzaga's Killian Tillie with 17 seconds left, Bamba converted a put-back with six seconds remaining to pull the Horns to within 67-64. Osetkowski then stole the ensuing in-bounds pass at midcourt, drove the ball and dished it to Jones for a game-tying three with two seconds left. The Bulldogs missed a long-distance shot at the buzzer, and Texas headed to overtime for the second consecutive game.
The Longhorns defense held Gonzaga to just 33.3 (8-24) percent shooting from the field, including 3-12 (25 percent) from three-point range, in the second half, and forced 14 turnovers.
A Bamba dunk gave the Longhorns a 69-67 advantage just seven seconds in the overtime session, but Gonzaga scored the next eight points and held Texas scoreless in the extra frame until the final five seconds.
Rui Hachimura paced Gonzaga with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Florida A&M on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. CT at the Frank Erwin Center, and the contest will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
