Allen leads four Longhorns in double-figure scoring with 17 points.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman forward Jarrett Allen scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and added a team-high seven rebounds, but Texas Basketball fell at No. 12/13 West Virginia, 77-62, on Monday night at WVU Coliseum.
Texas (10-18, 4-11 Big 12) shot 44.9-percent (22-of-49) from the field and hit 75-percent (15-of-20) of its shots from the free-throw line. Kerwin Roach Jr. posted 13 points and five rebounds while converting 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Eric Davis Jr. contributed 14 points and four rebounds, while Andrew Jones added 11 points and a team-high four assists.
West Virginia (22-6, 10-5 Big 12) was led by Jevon Carter, who had a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Lamont West added 23 points while hitting 6-of-8 from three-point range, and paced WVU to a 36-5 advantage in bench scoring.
Texas scored the first eight points of the game and jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the 16:09 mark following back-to-back baskets by Davis. A dunk by Allen put the Longhorns up 14-6, but West Virginia rallied back to tie the score at 17-17 and continued to ride a 15-0 run over a stretch of 2:53 to grab a 25-17 lead with 8:47 left in the first half.
The Mountaineers expanded their cushion to build a 46-32 halftime advantage. West scored 20 of his 23 points in the opening half,
Texas made a charge midway through the second half. A Davis 3-pointer helped start a 9-0 run for the Longhorns over a stretch of 2:53 to trim the deficit to 71-60 with 5:40 left. The Longhorns held the Mountaineers scoreless over a span of four minutes, but WVU held Texas scoreless over the final 4:47 to seal the victory.
The Longhorns will host No. 3/3 Kansas on Saturday, Feb. 25, presented by St. David's HealthCare. Tip is set for 5 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
