FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman forward Jarrett Allen tied his career high with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and added a game-high nine rebounds and three steals, but the Longhorns fell to TCU, 78-63, in a Big 12 Conference matchup at Schollmaier Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, TCU earned its first season sweep of the Longhorns since the 1986-87 season.
Freshman guard Andrew Jones posted his seventh consecutive game scoring in double figures with 14 points and a team-high seven assists, while senior forward Shaquille Cleare added 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.
TCU (16-7, 5-5 Big 12) was led by the dual attack of Vlad Brodziansky, who tallied 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and four blocks, and Alex Robinson, who added 17 points and eight assists.
Texas (9-14, 3-7 Big 12) scored its first six points in the paint to start the game, but an early 7-0 run by TCU put the Horned Frogs up 8-6 at the 16-minute mark. Another 7-0 TCU run allowed the Horned Frogs to take a 9-point lead (21-12) with 9:24 remaining, but five points from Jones and a layup from Eric Davis Jr. pulled the Longhorns to within two (21-19) at the 8:34 mark.
Trailing 33-29 with 3:33 left in the first half, a pair of jumpers from Jones and Davis Jr. tied the score at 33 at the 1:59 mark. Sharp free throw shooting by the Horned Frogs would allow TCU to carry a 38-35 lead into halftime. Jones and Allen led all first-half scorers with 11 points each.
Allen opened the scoring just ten seconds into the second half with a layup to cut the TCU lead to one (38-37), but Kenrich Williams responded with a three-pointer to extend the Horned Frogs' lead to 41-37 at the 19:38 mark. A pair of fast break buckets from Kendal Yancy and Cleare narrowed TCU's lead to 48-47 with 15:40 remaining.
After an Allen layup trimmed the margin to 50-49 at the 14:43 mark, the Horned Frogs used a Brandon Parrish layup and three-pointer and a Robinson layup to increase their advantage to 57-49 with 12:58 remaining. Points in the paint from Texas' forward duo of Allen and Cleare cut the TCU lead to 62-57 with 9:02 remaining. The Longhorns finished the game scoring 40 of their 63 points in the paint.
A three from JD Miller gave TCU its first double-digit lead of the day (67-57) at the 6:02 mark. UT trimmed the margin to 67-60 after a Jones free throw with 4:38 left, but the Horned Frogs sealed the victory with a 7-0 run that gave TCU a 74-60 cushion at the 3:14 mark.
The Longhorns finished the night shooting 46.6-percent from the field (27-of-58). Texas allowed an opponent to shoot over 50-percent from the floor for the first time this season, as TCU converted 51.7-percent (30-of-58) on the afternoon.
