AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field opens its outdoor season this weekend as the Longhorns send a small group of student-athletes to compete at the UTSA Invitational. Texas will take a group of other in-state schools along with Purdue in a team scored meet over two days of action beginning Friday afternoon. Admission to the meet is free on Friday and $5 for Saturday's action at Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio.
Multiple school records in the women's throwing events will be under threat all season with the current record holder in the hammer throw Lauryn Caldwell continuing to grow in the event. Freshman Elena Bruckner was the No. 1 recruit in the nation and has a personal record more than a full meter farther than the school record in the discus. Junior Haley Crouser makes her Longhorn debut this weekend in the javelin. The former American high school record holder has a PR that is 16 inches shy of UT's record.
The men's throws group along with a few sprinters are set to compete for the Longhorns as well. Texas also will put its combined events athletes in a handful of events. Action starts at 1 p.m. Friday with three throwing events and a pair of distance events. Saturday's portion of the meet starts at 11 a.m. with remaining field events. A rolling schedule for running events starts at 2 p.m.
Fans can keep up with the action online with live results available through UTSA's web provider. Links to the results will be at goUTSA.com and TexasSports.com. Updates on the Longhorns will be on the team's official Twitter account @TexasTFXC.
