Givans, Burton, Sategna honored by conference
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field had a multitude of impressive performances last week at the Big 12 Indoor Championship and the Longhorns were honored on Thursday with three postseason awards. Head Coach Mario Sategna earned Men's Coach of the Year Honors while senior Senoj-Jay Givans was named Men's Outstanding Performer of the Year and freshman Rushelle Burton won Women's Outstanding Freshman of the Year honors.
Head Coach Mario Sategna was voted the Big 12 Indoor Men's Coach of the Year by his peers as the Longhorns grabbed the team championship with a total of 123.5 points. It marked the third Big 12 title for the men over the last five years and second under Sategna's watch as head coach.
Givans had an impressive showing last weekend winning his third Big 12 title in the 60 meters. He blazed his way to the finish line with a time of 6.59 seconds to rank third in the NCAA this season heading into the national championship next week. He also finished third in the 200 meters with a new personal record time 20.88 seconds. Givans helped seal the victory for the Longhorns running on the 4x400 meter relay that took first place and ensured the team title. In total, Givans scored 18.5 points for the Longhorns to help win the Big 12 title.
Burton left the competition behind in the 60 meter hurdles. Her time of 8.03 seconds in the prelims pushed her to third in school history and No. 6 on the NCAA list this season. She cruised to victory in the finals in 8.09 seconds, .14 faster than the runner-up. Her victory was significant in that she was the only freshman women to win an individual event at the Big 12 Championship.
This marks the second straight year the Longhorns have won the Big 12 Conference Men's Performer of the Year after Ryan Crouser and Zack Bilderback shared the award in 2016.
Burton is the fifth Longhorn to win the Big 12 Conference Women's Outstanding Freshman of the Year. It also marks the third time in the last five years a Texas freshman has won the women's award.
