Men’s Basketball drops Big 12 quarterfinal, 63-53, to No. 11/11 West Virginia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman guard Andrew Jones recorded a team-high 13 points while adding seven rebounds and four assists, but the Texas Longhorns fell to No. 11/11 West Virginia, 63-53, on Thursday evening at Sprint Center in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.
Senior guard Kendal Yancy also scored in double figures with 11 points and added four rebounds, while freshman Jarrett Allen led Texas with 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Longhorns (11-22, 4-14 Big 12) finished the night shooting 35.1-percent (20-of-57) from the field, with nearly half of its points (26) in the paint.
Jevon Carter led West Virginia (25-7, 12-6 Big 12) with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Kerwin Roach Jr. scored six of UT's first eight points, but West Virginia used an early 12-1 run to jump ahead 15-5 at the 14:57 mark in the first half. Texas scored its next four baskets from the paint to cut the margin to 20-16, and took the lead, 23-22, following an Eric Davis Jr. three-pointer with 8:44 remaining in the half.
After two lead changes and two ties, West Virginia regained control in the final 2:39 with a 10-1 run to give the Mountaineers a 39-30 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Mountaineers extended their lead to double digits and grabbed a 47-34 advantage after a Sagaba Konate dunk with 15:25 remaining. Texas responded with a 7-0 run over 2:41 capped by a dunk from freshman James Banks to pull within six (47-41) at the 12:27 mark.
The Texas defense limited West Virginia to three points over the next 7:29 and clawed back to within four (50-46) following a Yancy three-pointer with 8:30 remaining. West Virginia sealed the game with a 7-0 run that stretched its lead to 57-46 at the 6:34 mark, and the Longhorns could not get within eight points for the remainder of the contest.
