AUSTIN, Texas – Championship season is here for track and field and the Texas Longhorns are geared up to host the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. The NCAA announced declared entries for the East and West Preliminary Rounds on Thursday, and the Longhorns boast 52 current entries.
Texas has 27 entries for the men at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. That number does not count the two accepted entries into the decathlon for the men's squad that will go straight to the NCAA Championship. The women's squad has 25 entries set to compete in the West Prelims at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorns have their most entries coming in the women's 100 meter hurdles with four. Freshman Rushelle Burton leads the way with the No. 1 time in the nation this year, clocking in at 12.65 seconds. Junior Ariel Jones joined Burton in the top five of the region with her 12.87 at the Big 12 Championship last weekend. Sophomores Ashley Miller and Mariam Abdul-Rashid round out the tandem of Longhorns entered in the event.
Hurdles are a strong event for the men as well with three entries in the 110 meter hurdles. Spencer Dunkerley-Offor is ranked No. 2 in the West and coming off his first Big 12 Conference title. Decathlete Steele Wasik will run the hurdles along with sophomore John Burt.
The men's team also has three entries in the 200 meters and steeplechase.
Aldrich Bailey Jr., Senoj-Jay Givans and Charles Anumnu will bring senior leadership to the team in the 200 while Alex Rogers, Nate Moore and John Rice look to move onto the championship in Eugene, Oregon, in the steeplechase.
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds are set to run from Mike A. Myers Stadium next week, May 25-27. Student-athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths to the NCAA West/East Preliminary Rounds. Kentucky is hosting the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds next week. The best 24 relay times also advance to the NCAA Prelims. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the NCAA East and West Preliminary Rounds will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 7-10.
There is no decathlon competition at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. The top 24 athletes in those events earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championship site. The Longhorns will have Wolf Mahler and Steele Wasik both competing in the decathlon. They are ranked No. 8 and No. 11, respectively in the NCAA this season.
Tickets are on sale now to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. Multiple ticket options are available with single-day and all-session passes available. All-session prices range from $35 for adults to $25 for youth and seniors. Single-day tickets are $15 adults and $10 for youth/senior.
