SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Olympic gold medalist Michelle Carter will wear the red, white and blue again this summer as she won bronze at the USATF Championships on Saturday to qualify for Team USA to compete at the IAAF World Championships.
Carter measured a distance of 19.34 meters (63-5.50) to finish third in the women's shot put and secure her spot on Team USA for the world championship meet this summer in London. She held the lead through four round of throws but was overtaken in Round 5. She will be joined on the American team by Raven Saunders and Dani Bunch.
Five other Longhorns in action at the USATF Championships advanced through their respective rounds in running events, highlighted by Byron Robinson.
Robinson clocked in at 48.71 seconds in his heat of the 400 meter hurdles to automatically advance to Sunday's final. The 2016 Olympian posted the No. 3 time in the semifinals.
Olympic bronze medalist in the women's 400 meter hurdles, Ashley Spencer, also advanced to the final during Saturday's action. She crossed the line in 54.88 seconds to move on and posted the No. 6 time in the semifinals.
The first round of the 200 meters saw three Longhorns advance out of the first round and onto the semifinals.
Aldrich Bailey Jr. ran 20.76 seconds in his heat to advance on time and ranked No. 14 in the preliminaries.
For the women Kendall Baisden crossed the line with a time of 23.03 for her fastest time of the year. She ranked 11th in the first round. Alexandria Anderson also moved to the next round in the 200, grabbing the final spot at No. 16. Anderson clocked 23.14 seconds.
In Jamaica, senior Chrisann Gordon continued her strong season as she ran a new personal best during the semifinals of the 400 meters to advance to Sunday's final at the Jamaican National Championships. Gordon crossed the line in 50.30 seconds, improving on her time of 50.39 from the NCAA Championships. Her time was the fastest of the round by .18.
Gordon's former teammate at Texas and 2016 NCAA champion, Courtney Okolo, was unable to make Team USA in her final on Saturday. Okolo finished eighth in the final of the women's 400 meters. She clocked in at 51.23 seconds.
Texas freshman O'Brien Wasome also was in action at the Jamaican National Championships. He took on the field in the long jump and finished in eighth place. His longest leap measured in at 7.62 meters (25-0.00), just shy of his personal best from nine centimeters.
One future Longhorns was in action on Saturday at the USATF Junior Championships. Sprinter Micaiah Harris ran the 200 and 400 meters looking to qualify for Team USA and the Pan American Junior Championships later this summer in Peru.
Harris ran the No. 3 time in the semifinals of the 200 meters, clocking in at 21.30 seconds. He then finished seventh in the final of the 400 meters in 48.77 seconds. Harris would not run in the final of the 200 meters after that race in the 400.
Harris will join the Longhorns this fall. He hails from the same hometown and high school as Texas Olympian Byron Robinson.
The final day of action at the USATF Championships and Jamaican National Championships are set for Sunday. In addition to the athletes who advanced to their respective finals on Saturday, also in action will be Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser in the shot put.
