BUDAPEST, Hungary – Texas junior Townley Haas won his second major international gold medal in as many years and helped Team USA to a world title in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay Sunday on day one of the 17th FINA World Championships.
Quickly becoming one of the most dependable and versatile relay swimmers of his generation, Haas showed off his freestyle range and produced an exceptional split in the 4x100m freestyle relay final, less than a year removed from his relay-best 4x200m freestyle relay split at the Rio Olympics.
Haas joined Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni and Nathan Adrian in the final and edged Brazil for the gold in 3 minutes, 10.06 seconds. Brazil settled for silver at 3:10.34 and host Hungary won bronze in 3:11.99. Haas split 47.46 seconds on the relay's second leg, even faster than his relay-best 47.60 anchor from the preliminary round.
Haas wins his second major international medal in as many years after helping the U.S. to gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Rio Olympics. The Richmond, Virginia, native has helped the Longhorns to NCAA relay titles in the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays, and he may well add to his title haul this Friday (July 28) in the 4x200m freestyle relay in Budapest.
Elsewhere Sunday in Budapest, Texas senior Joseph Schooling advanced to the finals of the 50m butterfly. Schooling, the 2016 Olympic champion in the 100m butterfly for Singapore, qualified fifth for Monday's final in 22.93 seconds. Texas-Ex Clark Smith competed in the 400m freestyle preliminary round and placed 12th overall at 3:47.12.
Monday's preliminary round, which features Haas in the 200m freestyle, gets underway at 2:30 a.m. CT on Olympic Channel and OlympicChannel.com. The finals, featuring Schooling's 50m butterfly, air live on NBC Sports Network and NBCSports.com at 10:30 a.m. CT.
