UDINE, Italy – The United States U19 Women's World Cup Team took home the Silver Medal at the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup, falling to Russia, 86-82, in Sunday's Gold Medal Game, played in Udine, Italy.
Including its 6-1 record in 2017, USA women's teams are now 78-13 all-time in FIBA U19/Junior World Cup events with nine medals (seven gold, one silver, one bronze).
Texas sophomore guard Alecia Sutton recorded 11 points and three rebounds in 27 minutes of play in a starting role on Sunday. Fellow Longhorn Joyner Holmes brought down seven rebounds and tallied four points in 14 minutes.
The game featured 24 lead changes, and the USA's largest lead was only eight points, while Russia's largest lead was six points.
Russia out-rebounded the USA 48-37 and shot 52.4 percent from the field (33-of-63 FGs) compared to the USA's 40.2 percent from the field (33-of-82 FGs). The USA notched 22 points off of 17 Russian turnovers, while Russia got eight points off the USA's six turnovers.
For the seven-game tournament, Holmes led the United States with 8.7 rebounds per game while ranking third on her team with 9.0 points per game. Sutton started all seven games for the USA, averaging 8.0 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Texas Ex Kamie Ethridge, who lettered for the Longhorns from 1982-86, was an assistant coach on the USA Basketball U19 Team. Ethridge was part of coaching a USA Basketball medalist team for the second consecutive year after serving as an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning USA Basketball U18 Team at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Valdivia, Chile, last summer.
