Women's Tennis posts six singles wins on day one at Furman

Longhorns advance in all six of their singles draws Friday in Greenville.
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Texas advanced all six Longhorns to the second rounds of their respective singles draw Friday on day one of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman University.
Sophomore Petra Granic, ranked 39th in the ITA preseason singles rankings, outlasted Ole Miss' 91st-ranked Anna Vrbenska, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 to move on the semifinals in singles flight one.
Freshman Bojana Markovic of Serbia was victorious in her collegiate debut, as she posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Tennessee's Ari Riley. Markovic advances to the semifinals of singles flight two.
Junior Katie Poluta locked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Vanderbilt's Amanda Meyer to reach the semifinals in singles flight three. Freshman Marta Perez-Mur of Spain joined Markovic in making her collegiate debut, and like Markovic, she came away with a win. Perez-Mur dispatched Ohio State's Maria Tyrina 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semifinals in singles flight four.
Senior Dani Wagland rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Wake Forest's Mary Caroline Meredith to reach the flight six semifinals. Junior Chelsea Crovetti played a round-robin match in flight nine and defeated Vanderbilt's Payton Robinette, 6-1, 6-4.
"To win all six of our singles matches today, that's as encouraging of a start to the year as we could have hoped for," said UT head coach Howard Joffe. "It's not so much from perspective of the winning, but of the quality of players we were able to defeat today from the likes of Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Tennessee and others. It was a nice start to the tournament today."
