Track & Field adds Jones to 2018 Recruiting Class

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field Head Coach Mario Sategna announced the signing of Jonathan Jones to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement. Jones joins the 15 recruits who signed commitments in November and brings versatility to the class with his events.

Jones hails from Barbados where runs the 400, 800 and 1,500 meters for Coleridge & Parry School and Harrison College. Jones also runs with the Elite Distance club team in Barbados. His event combination will bring versatility that can be used individually and in the relays.

"We're very excited to add Jonathan Jones to this signing class," Sategna said. "He is a special talent that our staff did a great job in identifying and recruiting."

Jones has a personal best time of 46.92 seconds in the 400 meters, 1:48.16 in the 800 and has run 3:55.08 in the 1,500.

Assistant Coach Zach Glavash said he is looking forward to getting Jones on campus and working with him and credited the staff and team in him becoming a Longhorn. Glavash also believes Jones has similarities to one of the best runners UT has had.

"Jonathan is the type of athlete that we can use in both the 400, 800 and 1,500 meter events. He also will give us lots of options for the 4x400 and DMR. His 400 meter ability shows great promise in his potential in the 800. It is rare to find an athlete with this type of range. He reminds me of the type of ability and determination that school-record holder and two-time NCAA Champion Jacob Hernandez had," Glavash said. "This was a total team effort. Jonathan felt at home with the team and bought into the vision of the coaching staff."
