Men's Basketball's Roach II, Sims named preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention

Texas duo among seven players selected to the league’s preseason Honorable Mention team.
IRVING, Texas — University of Texas senior guard Kerwin Roach II and sophomore forward Jericho Sims have been named to the preseason All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention team, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. Big 12 Conference head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes, selected the awards.
Roach earned honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades last year. He led the team in steals (47) and ranked second in assists (3.6 apg), third in scoring (12.3 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (3.7 rpg) as a junior. Roach has played in 97 career games (62 starts) in his first three years in Austin and enters the season just 41 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark in his career (959).
Sims played in all 34 games (11 starts) as a freshman and ranked second on the team in blocked shots (18). On the year, he averaged 5.0 ppg and 3.9 rpg in 18.5 mpg. During his 11 starts, Sims averaged 7.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg in 27.9 mpg while hitting 66.7-percent (38-57) from the floor.
Kansas State senior forward Dean Wade was tabbed the Preseason Player of the Year. Kansas junior forward Dedric Lawson earned Preseason Newcomer of the Year accolades, while Kansas guard Quentin Grimes claimed Preseason Freshman of the Year honors.
The five-person Preseason All-Big 12 Team includes Lindell Wigginton (Iowa State), Dedric Lawson (Kansas), Barry Brown Jr. (Kansas State), Dean Wade (Kansas State) and Sagaba Konate (West Virginia). Joining Roach II and Sims on the Honorable Mention list are Cameron Lard (Iowa State), Udoka Azubuike (Kansas), Quentin Grimes (Kansas), Alex Robinson (TCU) and Jarrett Culver (Texas Tech).
UT hosts the Texas Tip-Off presented by American Campus Communities on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Gregory Gym. Doors open at 6 p.m. Central, and Longhorn Network will provide live coverage beginning at 6 p.m.
Texas opens the regular season at home against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised by Longhorn Network.
