No. 15 Ole Miss defeats No. 11 Women's Tennis, 4-2 at ITA National Team Indoors
02.11.2018 | Women's Tennis
Longhorns host South Florida and No. 1 Stanford next weekend.
MADISON, Wis. – No. 11 Texas (5-4) defeated two highly-ranked doubles pairs and added a singles win from sophomore Anna Turati, but No. 16 Ole Miss (6-1) knocked off the Longhorns by a 4-2 count Sunday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Longhorns posted wins at the first and second doubles positions to open the match and lock up the doubles point. At second doubles, sophomore Bianca Turati teamed with freshman Marta Perez-Mur to overpower Ole Miss' 27th-ranked tandem of Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova, 6-1.
The Rebels countered with a win at third doubles, but Texas freshman Bojana Markovic teamed with sophomore Petra Granic to upset Ole Miss' 11th-ranked tandem of Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles at first doubles, 7-5.
Anna Turati, who vaulted to a career-high No. 41 singles ranking last week, put the Horns up 2-0 with her convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles. However, Ole Miss ran off four consecutive points to close out the team win.
Ole Miss' 124th-ranked Jandric outlasted UT's 115th-ranked Markovic 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles, and the Rebels evened the tally at two with a 6-4, 6-3 win from Alexa Bortles over Marta Perez-Mur at fifth singles.
Ole Miss' 25th-ranked Hartono dealt UT's top-ranked Bianca Turati her first defeat in three months and prevailed 6-2, 7-6 (4) at first singles. The Rebels closed out the match with Machalova's 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Texas' Granic at third singles. The remaining contest at sixth singles was suspended.
Texas is scheduled to contest its first matches at the new Texas Tennis Center next weekend. The Horns will host South Florida on Friday (Feb. 16) before welcoming No. 1 Stanford on Saturday.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
From the department of small victories, the seventh try was the charm with respect to winning the doubles point. Bianca (Turati) and Marta (Perez-Mur) beat an excellent doubles team, and Bojana (Markovic) and Petra (Granic) gutted out a nail-biter against another highly-ranked team. Our ladies are giving 100% and battling all the way each day. On this basis, I couldn't be more proud of them. For such a young group it is easy to get discouraged, but every day they have battled superbly. I definitely think that a return to Austin and finally getting to compete at home after this long away stretch will be chicken soup for the Longhorns' proverbial soul.
