Longhorns collect singles wins from Anna and Bianca Turati, await No. 23 Northwestern on Sunday.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 11 Texas (4-1) garnered straight-sets singles wins from sophomores Anna and Bianca Turati, but Illinois knocked off the Longhorns by a 4-2 count Friday evening at Atkins Tennis Center.
The Fighting Illini were victorious at the second and first doubles positions, respectively to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Texas assumed the lead briefly after posting wins at the second and first singles positions.
Anna Turati finished off Jaclyn Switkes (6-0, 6-1) at second singles before Bianca Turati put the Horns on top with her 6-3, 6-1 win over the 114th-rnaked Asuka Kawai at first singles. The Illini, however, ran off consecutive wins at the fifth, sixth and third positions to close out the 4-2 win.
Illinois' Emilee Doung knocked off UT's Fernanda Labraña (6-3, 6-2) at fifth singles, and the Illini took the lead for good behind Sasha Belaya's 7-5, 6-3 win over Marta Perez-Mur at sixth singles. UT's Petra Granic saved multiple match points at third singles, but Mia Rabinowitz held on for a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win to preserve the win.
Texas wraps its road trip on Sunday with a visit to No. 23 Northwestern (11 a.m. CT).
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
While this loss is disappointing for a multitude of reasons, I am genuinely happy for (Illinois coach) Evan Clark, who is not only a personal friend but, in my view, one of the best coaches in the country. Evan and Illinois are a well-kept secret. It's too bad Texas had to spill the beans on what he is doing at that program. With respect to the match, we were outplayed, outfought, outcoached and out of sorts from the beginning. It's no secret that we have a very young team, and the hope is that we can all profit and learn some lessons as we move forward. In Northwestern, we will get another ferocious team to contend with on Sunday.
