Longhorns move to the consolation bracket on Saturday.
MADISON, Wis. – No. 11 Texas (5-2) picked up singles wins from sophomore Petra Granic and freshman Bojana Markovic, but No. 4 Georgia (4-0), the tournament's second seed, held off the Horns by a 4-2 count Friday in the first match at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Georgia advances to take on seventh-seeded Duke in the second round on Saturday while Texas moves to the consolation bracket. UT will meet South Carolina on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
The Bulldogs opened Friday's doubles session with a victory at the second slot, though Texas countered with a 6-4 win from Granic and Markovic over Annette Goulak and Kennedy Shaffer at third doubles. Georgia clinched the point by way of its 7-5 win at first doubles from Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc over Anna Turati and Fernanda Labraña.
Georgia pushed its lead to 3-0 behind victories at the sixth and fifth singles positions, respectively, before Texas answered with convincing wins from Granic and Markovic. Granic dealt UGA's Marta Gonzalez a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at third singles, and Markovic finished off Christofi at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Georgia, however, produced the match-clinching point at second singles. Shaffer dropped the first set to UT's Anna Turati and stayed in the match with a 6-4 second-set win. Shaffer claimed the third set, 6-1 to seal the Bulldogs' victory. The remaining contest pitting Texas' top-ranked Bianca Turati against Georgia's eighth-ranked Katarina Jokic at first singles was suspended early in the third set.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
The outcome was naturally disappointing for our ladies. While we did come very close today, it is clear that our team and program are on the rise. It's equally clear that we have a young team and that it will take some time to get everyone going. The highlight today was (Bojana) Markovic's impressive win. Petra Granic also played a good match. The ladies understand that we will face another tough opponent tomorrow and we will need to be ready to go in the morning.
