AUSTIN, Texas - Three more meet records fell on Friday at the 2018 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Built By The Home Depot. Tori Franklin broke the meet and Mike A. Myers Stadium record in the women's triple jump, while former Texas Longhorn Ashley Spencer broke the women's 400-meter hurdles invitational meet record. The boys' javelin record was also broken.
The day began with the preliminaries of the men's and women's 4x100. On the women's side, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas, Clemson, Baylor, Duke, New Mexico JC and Oklahoma advanced with the Tigers of LSU claiming the top spot in a time of 42.97. On the men's side, Houston took the top spot in a time of 39.62. LSU, Baylor, Texas, Georgia, TCU, Northwestern State, Texas A&M and Sam Houston State joined the Cougars in advancing to Saturday's finals.
The action in the women's 100-meter hurdles and men's 110-meter hurdles preliminaries was fierce. Texas will send four to the finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles, with senior Pedrya Seymour taking the top qualifying spot with a time of 12.97. LSU will also send multiple runners to tomorrow's final, with two advancing. On the men's side, no school qualified more than one athlete, with LSU freshman Damion Thomas taking the top qualifying spot with a mark of 13.68 seconds.
In the women's 100 meters, LSU qualified two runners with Aleia Hobbs (10.93) and Kortnei Johnson (10.97) taking the top two spots, respectively. In the men's 100 meters, Butler CC's Travis Collins took the top spot with a 10.16 (10.156), edging out Sam Houston State's Chris Jefferson by 1/1000th of a second. Northwestern State was the only program to advance multiple runners to tomorrow's finals.
In the women's triple jump, Tori Franklin set the meet record with a mark of 14.48 (47-6.5) to win the event. That mark is No. 2 in American history behind Keturah Orji's mark of 14.71 set in 2016. The previous meet and facility record was owned by LSU's Keisha Spencer (2000) with a mark of 13.97 (45-10).
In the women's 400-meter hurdles invitational, Nike's Ashley Spencer ran a 56.43 to set a new Texas Relays record. She bested TaNisha Mills' (Sheffield Elite) previous mark of 56.54 set in 2005.
Saturday's action begins at 8:15 a.m. with the high school 3,200 meters. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the high school girls section B pole vault.
Following opening ceremonies at 1:05 p.m., the action at Myers Stadium will heat up as the 2018 Texas Relays head into the home stretch. The excitement will include the 4x100 meter relays, the 100- and 110-meter hurdles, the 100 meters, the miles, the 200 meters and the 4x400 meter relays.
