Longhorns win a 12th straight match for the first time since 2005.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 5 Texas (17-4, 7-0 Big 12) claimed the doubles point and three singles matches in a 4-0 victory over Iowa State Friday afternoon at Texas Tennis Center.
The Longhorns win a 12th straight match for the first time since 2005 when Texas advanced to the NCAA title match and finished as the national runner-up. A win on Sunday would give Texas at least a share of the Big 12 Conference regular season title.
Texas claimed the third and first doubles matches to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Freshmen Fernanda Labraña and Marta Perez-Mur dealt Annabella Bonadonna and Karen Alvarez a 6-0 defeat at the third position. UT closed out doubles with a 6-2 victory from the 45th-ranked tandem of sophomore Petra Granic and freshman Bojana Markovic over Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola at first doubles. The remaining match was suspended.
Senior Dani Wagland staked Texas to a 2-0 lead behind her 6-0, 6-1 win over Alvarez at sixth singles. Perez-Mur chalked up her eighth straight victory and knocked off Margarita Timakova by a 6-1, 6-0 count at fourth singles.
Granic closed out the Longhorns' 12th straight win with her 10th straight victory, a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over ISU's Espindola at third singles. The remaining matches were suspended.
Texas goes for a share of the Big 12 Conference regular season title on Sunday when it meets West Virginia. First serve is set for 1:33 p.m. CT with live coverage on Longhorn Network.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
Thoughts on the match: For a coach, when we decided that we were going to go ahead and play without Bianca Turati, it was a little anxiety-provoking for a coach. Yet, I did feel confident in the strength of the team and trusted that the girls would band together and do a good job. In the end they did. It was definitely not our best tennis. The conditions ended up being quite adverse with the strong winds and it was also very hot and humid. So, definitely not our best tennis, but I think more than anything it may just be the product of a very tough travel week. My sense is that the group was just a little tired but the hope is with some good food, some good sleep and we'll be ready to go against West Virginia.
