39 Longhorns earn Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field

Big 12 Conference Announcement
AUSTIN, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Teams on Wednesday and the Texas Longhorns came away with 39 honorees, 20 for the men and 19 women. A total of 32 of those were named to the first team for Texas as the league recognized 344 student-athletes overall. Oklahoma State led the league with 25 selections to the men's team, and Baylor's women paced the conference with 33.
Texas landed 16 men on the first team and four on the second team. The women's team had 16 make the first team and three named to the second team.
The 16 Longhorns on the first team for the men was outdone only by Oklahoma State's 19 and halted UT's streak of three straight years leading the conference in men's first-team honors. It does mark the fourth consecutive year the Texas men have set a program record for first-team honorees.
With 19 total honorees, the Texas women tied a program record for most Academic All-Big 12 selections from 2010 and 2012. The 16 first-teamers also ties a program best from the same years.
Fifth-year senior Mary Beth Hamilton received her fourth first-team recognition to lead the Longhorns.
A total of five men were recognized as members the Academic All-Big 12 for the third time in their careers: Logan Emery, Jake McConnell, Brian Peterson and Barrett Poth earned their third honor. And for the women, Ariel Jones, Shay Petty and Ali Uhle all received academic honors for a third time.
Longhorns receiving Academic All-Big 12 honors for the second time in their careers are: Kirema Macharia, Wolf Mahler, Ika Morton, Chris Ntreh, Jacob Pickle, Alex Rogers, Gabby Crank, Haley Crouser, Meghan Lloyd, Georgia Wahl and Jordan Welborn.
The following Longhorns received Academic All-Big 12 for the first time in their careers: Men: Garek Bielaczyc, Mohamed Deyaf, Fabian Dohmann, Daniel Golden, Zach Hamstra, Connor Hendrickson, George Patrick, Steele Wasik, Wesley Ward, Alan Zapalac. Women: Skyler Bollinger, Elena Bruckner, Jonesy Chauvot, Destiny Collins, Alex Cruz, Teahna Daniels, Abby Guidry, Martha Hughes, Olivia Thompson and Ashtin Zamzow.
The Big 12 recognized a total of 343 track and field student-athletes this year on the all-academic teams with 135 members on the men's team and 208 on the women's. A total of 280 of those student-athletes earned first team honors and 11 were recognized with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or high either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 with second team selections holding 3.00-3.19 GPAs. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except the percentage of participation are also eligible.
