Tripp Piperi booked his trip to the IAAF U20 World Championships next month with the victory.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Coming off a fourth-place finish at NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier in the month, true freshman Tripp Piperi booked a trip to the IAAF U20 World Championships next month with a first-place finish at last weekend's USATF Junior Outdoor Championships. The U20 World Championships are July 10-15 in Tampere, Finland.
Piperi won with a throw of 70-6.5 (21.5m), coming on the second attempt of his series. Each of his first four throws were over 21 meters. His first throw of the day was 69-4.75 (21.15m). Piperi had the top three throws in the event, and only Tennessee's Jordan West, who threw 69-5.25 (21.16m) on his second attempt, had a better throw than Piperi's first. Piperi's third attempt was 69-10.75 (21.3m) while his fourth attempt was 69-5.5 (21.17m), which both would've also won the event had it not been for his winning throw on his second attempt.
Piperi now moves on to USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet starts Thursday (June 21) and runs through Sunday. It will be held at Drake University. Piperi will be joined in the men's shot put by Longhorn Legend and 2016 Rio Olympic Games Gold Medalist Ryan Crouser.
