Junior All-American falls in three sets to WTA No. 258 Renata Zarazua (Mexico) on Thursday.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — University of Texas junior All-American Bianca Turati dropped a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision to Renata Zarazua (Mexico) on Thursday in the Round of 36 at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) pro circuit event at the Florida Tennis Center. Zarazua is the No. 5 seed in the tournament and is No. 258 in the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world singles rankings.
Thursday's three-set match between Turati, No. 576 in the WTA rankings, and Zarazua lasted two hours and 45 minutes. Turati raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and cruised to a 6-1 win. In a back-and-forth second set, Turati led 5-4 and served for the match at 40-30. Zarazua responded by winning the next three points to even the set at 5-5, then broke Turati and held serve to close out a 7-5 set victory.
Zarazua jumped out to a 3-0 cushion in the final set, before Turati held serve and then broke Zarazua to pull within 3-2. Zarazua answered by winning the next two games to build a 5-2 lead and finished out the match with a 6-3 set win.
Earlier this fall, Turati won the ITF pro circuit singles championship at the 15k tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C. (Sept. 30). It marked her third ITF pro circuit singles title during the 2018 calendar year. She previously claimed back-to-back singles titles in August at the 15k events in Biella, Italy and Sezze, Italy.
