Twin sister Anna Turati falls in singles championship match at ITA National Fall Championships.
MALIBU, Calif. — University of Texas women's tennis senior Bianca Turati rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against WTA (Women's Tennis Association) No. 438 Katie Volynets (USA) to capture the singles championship on Sunday in the ITF (International Tennis Federation) 25k pro circuit event at Pepperdine University's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The win marked Turati's second career 25k singles title and her first on hard courts, as she won the 25k event in Tarvisio, Italy earlier this summer on clay courts.
Turati, No. 371 in the latest WTA rankings, defeated Volynets in a match that lasted three hours and 14 minutes. After splitting the first two sets, Turati jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the decisive third set. Volynets answered by winning the next three games to pull even at 4-4.
With Volynets serving at 30-0, Turati responded by winning the next four points to break Volynets and take a 5-4 advantage. In the ensuing game, Turati held serve in a deuce game to close out the match and secure the singles title.
In other Texas Women's Tennis action, senior Anna Turati saw her outstanding run at the Oracle ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Fall Championships come to an end on Sunday with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 loss in the singles final to No. 7 Sara Daavettila of North Carolina at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Daavettila raced out leads of 3-0 and 5-3 in the opening set, before Turati held serve to trim the margin to 5-4. Daavettila held a 40-15 advantage in the ensuing game, but Turati rallied to save three set points and broke Daavettila in a deuce game to tie the set at 5-5. Both players held serve to force a first-set tiebreak. With Turati leading 5-4 on serve in the breaker, Daavettila won the next three points to close out the opening set.
Daavettila jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second set. Turati broke Daavettila to pull within 2-1, but Daavettila answered with a service break of her own and won the next three games to finish out the victory.
The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships featured 128 of the nation's top collegiate singles players (64 men and 64 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men's teams and 32 women's teams). In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament.
