Worley, Watson earn USTFCCA regional recognitions

The pair were named the South Central Region's male athlete and men's coach of the year Tuesday.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas junior Sam Worley was named South Central Region Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and Texas men's distance coach Pete Watson received the Johnny Morriss Award -- the South Central Region's Men's Coach of the Year distinction – from the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
Worley, a junior from New Braunfels, Texas, won individual medalist honors on Friday at the South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas, running the 10K course in 29:49.8. Worley also won this season at the Bear Twilight Invitational and the Texas Invitational. He finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship and seventh at the Chile Pepper Festival.
Worley won Big 12 Runner of the Week honors on two occasions this season, doing so on Sept. 3 and Oct. 1.
Watson, in his second year at Texas, coached his team to the South Central Region title last Friday. Watson's Longhorns also won the team championship in three earlier meets this year - the Chile Pepper Festival, the Bear Twilight and the Texas Invitational. The Horns finished third in the Big 12 Championship.
The Texas men, and women, will compete in the NCAA Championships this Saturday, in Terra Haute, Indiana. It is the seventh time in the last 10 years that both of UT's men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the NCAA meet.
