Longhorn legend Michelle Carter was a seven-time All-American and the 2006 Indoor shot put national champion at Texas.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track and Field legend Michelle Carter (2004-07) is one of seven members of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame's (TSHOF) Class of 2020, it was announced last week.
Carter is a three-time Olympian who won a gold medal in the shot put at the 2016 Rio Olympics, as well as one of the most successful competitors in UT history. She shined in the shot put ring as a Longhorn during her career on the Forty Acres and as a professional. At Texas, Carter was a seven-time All-American and won the Big 12 Conference five times. She won the 2006 NCAA title indoors and helped the Texas women claim the NCAA team title. Carter medaled in the shot put at four other NCAA Championship events, placing second on three occasions.
Carter is the most successful female shot putter in American history. She won her first senior international medal at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, where she took home bronze. As an Olympian, Carter finished 15th at the 2008 Beijing Games, fifth at the 2012 London Games and won gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016 with a 20.63m/67-8.25 throw that set an American record. It was the first time an American woman had won gold in the shot put at the Olympics and the first time an American female has won any medal in the event at the Olympics since 1960.
The 2020 TSHOF class will be honored on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at the Waco Convention Center in Waco, Texas.
