Track & Field set for action at two weekend meets

The Longhorns will head to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Shootout and Seattle for the Husky Classic.

Coming off a strong showing at last weekend's Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, The University of Texas Track & Field program will split once again for two meets this weekend. A majority of the team will head to Lubbock - site of the upcoming Big 12 Indoor Championships - for the Texas Tech Shootout, while a handful of the distance group will travel to Seattle for the Husky Classic.
**Due to impending weather, the Husky Classic will be condensed into a one-day meet on Friday. Saturday is cancelled**
"This is another important weekend for our student-athletes as chances are becoming limited to hit their qualifying marks to the upcoming postseason," head coach Edrick Floréal said. "With the group heading to Lubbock, this meet will be a great opportunity to not only hit big marks, but to compete on the site of the upcoming conference championship. Our distance group heading to Seattle has a great chance to run some really fast times against very strong competition at the Husky Classic."
PIPERI WINS SHOT PUT WITH MASSIVE THROW
Sophomore shot putter Tripp Piperi won the event at the Charlie Thomas Invitational with a throw of 20.57m/67-6 to become the No. 2 performer in school history. He trails only Ryan Crouser, who won the gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, for the longest indoor shot put attempt in school history. Piperi, who also had a mark of 20.27m in his series, had the two longest, and five of the top eight throws in the nation last weekend. He was named Big 12 Co-Men's Athlete of the Week for his efforts on Wednesday.
BRUCKNER ALSO WINS SHOT PUT
Junior Elena Bruckner made it 3-for-3 on the season in the shot put with a first-place finish at last weekend's Charlie Thomas Invitational. She then followed up a victory in the shot put with the No. 6 throw in school history in the weight throw to finish second.
FIVE LONGHORNS POST VICTORIES
A total of five Longhorns posted wins at last weekend's Charlie Thomas Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. Bruckner and Piperi swept the shot put, while John Burt (60H), Steffin McCarter (long jump) and the women's 4x400m Relay all came away with wins.
